MBAA

MBAA

Message. Brand.
Audience. Asset.

Marketing begins with something that needs to be communicated.

MBAA is the HMG marketing process for moving that originating thought through brand and audience understanding before determining the asset that should carry it.

What are we trying to communicate, who is communicating it, who needs to receive it, and what should carry it?
Why MBAA Exists

The requested asset is not always the right starting point.

Marketing requirements often arrive as deliverables.

A landing page. An email. A campaign. A series of social posts. A piece of sales material. An article.

Those requests may be completely appropriate.

But the format itself does not answer the more important question: what is the organization actually trying to communicate?

MBAA moves upstream from the requested output so the communication can be understood before the form is selected.

The asset is a decision made at the end of the process, not the assumption made at the beginning.
The MBAA Progression

One thought. Four stages of development.

MBAA begins with the originating communication and moves toward the form that should ultimately carry it.

The message is not frozen at the beginning. Each stage helps determine what the communication becomes.

01

MESSAGE

What are we trying to communicate?

Identify the thought, idea, offer, announcement, belief, objective, or change that needs to enter the communication process.

02

BRAND

Who is communicating it?

Shape the thought through the organization’s identity, voice, positioning, values, credibility, and way of speaking.

03

AUDIENCE

Who needs to receive it?

Refine the communication around the people who need to understand, interpret, consider, or act on it.

04

ASSET

What should carry it?

Determine the form best suited to deliver the refined communication into the market.

Message originates. Brand shapes. Audience refines. Asset carries.

Message

What are we trying to communicate?

Every piece of marketing begins with something that needs to move from thought into communication.

That starting point may be a product, service, offer, announcement, belief, point of view, launch, business objective, or change in how an organization wants to be understood.

The Message stage identifies that originating thought clearly enough for the rest of the process to work with it.

It does not presume the final wording.

The message will continue to develop as the brand and audience provide the context through which it must ultimately be expressed.

  • Core thought
  • Communication objective
  • Offer or proposition
  • Desired understanding
  • Desired movement or action
  • What needs to change
  • What matters most
  • What should not be lost
Stage Output

A sufficiently clear originating communication intent.

MBAA — 02

Brand

Who is communicating it?

The same thought should not sound the same coming from every brand.

The Brand stage examines the organization through which the communication will be expressed.

Identity, voice, positioning, values, credibility, visual character, existing market perception, and the organization’s established way of speaking all help shape what the message can credibly become.

The objective is not to decorate the originating thought.

It is to make the communication recognizably and authentically belong to the organization delivering it.

  • Brand identity
  • Positioning
  • Voice
  • Language
  • Values
  • Credibility
  • Offer context
  • Existing perception
  • Visual character
  • Authentic claims
Stage Output

A brand-shaped communication direction.

MBAA — 03

Audience

Who needs to receive it?

Communication is not complete merely because the sender understands it.

The Audience stage examines how the communication needs to be understood by the people it is intended to reach.

HMG considers what the audience already knows, what matters to them, what they need, what they question, what they may resist, and what language or context helps the communication become relevant.

The objective is not to manipulate the audience.

It is to refine the communication so the intended people can meaningfully receive and understand what the brand is trying to say.

  • Audience identity
  • Existing awareness
  • Needs
  • Priorities
  • Questions
  • Objections
  • Language
  • Context
  • Motivation
  • Intended response
Stage Output

An audience-refined communication direction.

MBAA — 04

Asset

What should carry it?

Only after the communication has moved through Message, Brand, and Audience does HMG determine what should be created.

The answer may still be the exact asset originally requested.

A landing page may still be the right landing page. One email may still be enough. A campaign may genuinely require several connected assets.

MBAA does not exist to make the engagement larger.

It exists to determine whether the chosen form actually fits the communication requirement.

  • Website copy
  • Landing pages
  • Email
  • Email sequences
  • Articles
  • Thought leadership
  • Campaigns
  • Social content
  • Sales materials
  • Messaging frameworks
  • Long-form content
  • Connected asset systems
Build what the communication requires — no more and no less.
Stage Output

The appropriate marketing asset or connected asset set.

Across the Process

The four stages carry more than four questions.

MBAA is deliberately simple at the structural level.

Other marketing considerations are not absent from the process. They move within it.

Intent

What the organization wants the communication to accomplish.

Meaning

The central thought the marketing needs to preserve.

Voice

How the communication sounds when expressed through the brand.

Relevance

Why the communication should matter to the intended audience.

Action

What movement the communication is intended to make possible.

Form

The asset, channel, or combination of assets chosen to carry the idea.

Marketing Coherence

A strong asset preserves the logic that created it.

MBAA is not complete merely because each stage has been considered.

The finished marketing should still carry the relationship between the originating thought, the brand expressing it, the audience receiving it, and the form chosen to deliver it.

Does the asset still carry the originating thought?
Does it sound like the brand?
Does it make sense to the audience?
Is the chosen form appropriate to the communication?
A strong asset preserves the logic that created it.
Application

MBAA sits behind the work. It is not the work itself.

HMG applies the process across different forms of marketing execution.

Copywriting

Move the communication into language.

MBAA can guide a single page, email, sales asset, website section, or other copy requirement.

Content Creation

Develop the idea with greater depth.

MBAA can guide articles, thought leadership, educational content, customer-facing materials, and other substantive work.

Campaign Development

Carry one thought across connected assets.

MBAA can help determine how a central communication idea should move across multiple campaign components.

Marketing Assets

Structure selected thinking into reusable form.

Where a recurring marketing requirement can be structured clearly, HMG may turn that thinking into a reusable marketing asset.

Process Boundary

A structure for better marketing decisions — not a rigid formula.

MBAA provides HMG with a disciplined way to move from thought toward marketing execution.

It is not:

  • a guarantee of marketing performance;
  • a reason to make every engagement larger;
  • a substitute for client knowledge or participation;
  • a requirement to use every available channel;
  • a rigid sequence that forces identical execution across every project.

The process exists to improve the relationship between what an organization wants to communicate and what ultimately gets created.

MBAA structures the movement from thought to marketing execution without beginning with the deliverable by default.
Message First. Asset Last.

Everything between them shapes what the marketing becomes.

The thought begins the communication.

The brand shapes it. The audience refines it. The asset carries it.
